About Kai-Fong

Welcome to Kai-Fong.

According to the wikiality, a kaifong (noun) is an:

“association formed to promote and protect the interests of a neighbourhood, and also a member of such an association, in early use esp. a leader or senior figure in the community.”

As most Hongkongers will know, it comes from gaai-fong, meaning neighbour or neighbourhood, with a hard ‘G’. The Brits gave it that ‘K’ sound.

Well, we’re not going to suggest we’re “leaders” or “senior figures,” but we’re fine with promoting the interests of the city’s ’hoods. Meaning we’re happy to talk up that local baker or indie coffee roaster or noodle slinger who doesn’t have a budget for a PR agency. There are low-key corners all over the place, and plenty of hidden gem (enter cool shop/restaurant/watering hole here) that could be doing better business. So we’re here to try to find those. Plenty of those get lots of ink in Chinese, but we don’t all read Chinese. And without bashing anyone, bad egg tarts and bad action movies are bad egg tarts and bad action movies. No advertisers means you’ll get as honest an opinion as we can give you. To borrow from elsewhere: it’s kind of a HK FUBU.

Okay, that’s the end of our appropriation.

There’s a movie section because Hongkongers love to go to movies. Food because they like to eat even more. Take-5 is there for when you want to broaden your horizons. Travel is a kind fantasy for the time being, but it will be back. ’Til then, we’ll just shuffle around Hong Kong and see what’s up.

Check back often, and feel free to hit us with comments.
